Show 'n Tell

Wow! What a guild. Holidays, family, busy schedules - nothing keeps our members from quilting.

Jenell used the time to learn something new - maybe no border print, but your result is gorgeous.

You may cover your face, but no way can Susie hide the fact that she came up with a great use for her color technique she learned from Lisa at our Saturday workshop last year.

Janet is so energetic that she can also get a baby doll quilt done to match the big one and Jane gave us a great idea when you think you have yuck.

Frances' grandson wants the whole works in his quilt. He instructed his older brother on the proper way to pick fabrics - even panels. Wonderful layout Frances.

Dixie is not hiding back there, she just wants to make sure that we get to see the whole quilt.

First BOM of the Year

2011 Christmas Party

Soup, soup, soup, soup, soup - well you get the picture - 8 crock pots filled with fantastic soup and tables galore of crackers, breads, finger foods and of course - let's not forget the desserts! WOW!!!! And thank you to all our "Chefs".

This year we had an outstanding turn out and laughter, conversation and great help abounded.
Enjoy the pictures. Carol B. and her crew did an outstanding job decorating. Clean up is what always astounds - everyone pitches in and helps. Thank you very much to all the husbands that helped move the heavy stuff and carry out.

2011 COMMUNITY SERVICE

Thank you, thank you, thank you Verna Lee for doing such an outstanding job handling the 2011 Community Service project - Children's quilts to Dr. Johnson.

Rumor had it that we did 74 quilts. WOW!!!!!! And thank you bunches and congratulations to all of us.

Verna Lee presented all the quilts to Dr. Johnson and thanks to many of our members who helped pack them up.

Verna Lee's highlight of the night was her guest Doris - the lady at Gran Villas that did 32 of the quilts all on her own by hand. Doris just turned 90 years young and had a blast this year having something useful to do. Word has it that she will continue on in 2012. So if you have scraps, left over blocks, or kits that you would like to give to Doris - please see Verna Lee. This may be a many year project - helping others - help others.

Great job Verna Lee!

2011 UFO's

Marilyn headed up the UFO position this year and did a fantastic job of not only keeping track, but encouraging people. If you missed out on some of your own UFO's that you finished but did not report, we apologize - you do have to turn in a UFO sheet (this next few weeks is a good time to start 2012's sheet) and you do have to let the person handling the record keeping know that you are Show 'n Telling it.

First place went to Lisa with 6 UFO's finished this year. Second place was a tie with 3 finished UFO's each - Jenell and Deb.

Congratulations to each of you and thank you very much Marilyn for keeping the records.

At the December 5th meeting, President Lisa will be turning over the guild to the 2012 President and the new board of officers will start work organizing next years schedules.

Remember to congratulate those that donate their time and efforts in making our guild an outstanding group of quilters.

What a surprise for Ann - just look at the expression on her face. You sell tickets through out the year and maybe hope a little - but when that hope nets results - WOW!!!!!!!!!

Ann took home her winnings and Stacy sold the most tickets which earned her the table runner. Congratulations to both ladies! And thank you everyone for selling an outstanding, top money making record sales - $1,225 to $1,240 (still balancing out the tickets and money).

SEW COUNTRY in Belleville shows off the new

Who is the best there is? SHEILA !!!!!!

Even though she tries to get everyone to buy at least 10 yards of everything - Sheila really is the best. The best at getting you to laugh, the best in buying what everyone (and we do mean everyone) just has to have, and the best in showing us how to.

Sheila gave us the how to on a couple of Christmas ideas and let us in on the secret of who her designer is for those great table runners she has for every season - SHEILA - herself. How lucky we are to have her, just ask her - she will tell you. And while she is at it, she will also tell you what is new on the market, and go out there and find what you have need of. Taking the trip up to Belleville is worth every minute. When you get there - her shop is a treasure trove of possibilities. If you do not have time before the holidays - get a group together and see her first thing in the new year, you won't regret it.

Thank you Sheila for bringing lots of goodies for us.

The Last Show and Tell of the Year

How sad that we will not be seeing finished projects until 2012 - so thank you everyone for all those that you brought in and shared.

Remember our Christmas Sew Day in August? What a hit it was, and we are reaping the benefits with all the pillow cases and hot pads that we are seeing finished and ready for Christmas gifts. Thank you again Jan for some great ideas.

Its also a treat to see the next generation already working on quilting projects. Good job Hayley.

Congratulations to Donna for becoming our first certified quilt detective.

Loraine passed on to her grandchildren the coloring technique that Lisa taught at our Nov. sew day. What a great present to give to mom and dad.

Look closely - Jan duplicated her version of a pattern for two granddaughters that share the same room - see the different center blocks?

Cindy is still finding bargains out there.

Be on the lookout for the display of donation quilts for the doctor at the December meeting. What was that last count?

Grand daughter Makayla is following in Verna Lee's foot steps.

Frances and Judy both had finished 35 minute quilts to show off.

Remember the sheets you could print your embroidery pattern on - Lisa showed it months ago as a new product that was out - Carol put it to use and showed us a darling Raggedy - looking forward to seeing how and what she uses it in.

November Sew Day Items

Busy, Busy, Busy!!!! We have members that are really on their toes and finish up what they start. Congratulations on finishing your projects and thank you for all the compliments on the Sew Day "teachers". Looking forward to seeing other finished projects in the future.

Clifton Sew Day a Big Hit

Saturdays' Sew Day in Clifton hosted by Bonnie Olsen was a spectacular day. There were 20 ladies that attended the four classes that were offered. Bonnie hosted the event from afar, but the work she had done before her hospitalization paid off. Susie started out the morning with Twilling. Susie had kits made up for everyone with a pattern already marked and needles in a really neat looking "match book" type of case.

Lisa presented the coloring segment with loads of information on how to, when, where, why and what to watch out for. There were some awesome patterns brought in that will be great to see all done.

Iowana showed us how you can get colors in a box of 120. Susie had found ones that twist so that you do not have to sharpen and that you can get a box of nothing but white crayons to aid in blending.

Lunch was provided by the members of the church, set up by them and cleaned up by them. Our thanks goes out to everyone that donated and to Nola and Glendora (excuse me if I spelled your names wrong) for being there all day and keeping the coffee, tea and water flowing. Free will donations were much appreciated.

After lunch, Vevia presented her class on flowers. Everyone started out with an easy prairie point leaf and then a bigger type. Followed by two types of flowers and many suggestions how you could change, add and what to use them in or on. Charlotte finished her ruching flower and put it with some hair clips she had and used it to gussie up her do.

Bonnie was to present the last demonstration for the day with options to finishing off a quilt. Lucky for us she had her prep work all done and we only had to pass out her handouts and go over her sample. What a gorgeous way to use an orphan block.

Thank you to everyone for making Saturday a fun day. Thank you Bonnie for all the planning you put into the day. Thank you to our three instructors for the kits they provided and the wonderful and easy way they presented their classes. Thank you to all our attendees for the pleasure you gave us as you learned these new techniques.

Nebraska National Quilt Festival worth the drive

Lincoln, Nebraska is really just a hop and a skip away - well okay, about 2.5 hours driving. However, the quilt festival was worth the drive and side trips like to the International Quilt Study Center & Museum, and Stauffer's Cafe, and Havelocks Fire House Restaurant made it a very full day.

Parking is not the easiest thing to find around the Pershing Center in Lincoln - John hit the mark when he found the Eagle public parking facility about 1.5 blocks west on N Street. Someone write that down so that we all remember it - who knows, next year we might get a car caravan going up there. The quilts on display downstairs came from all over including a group from the Road to California - fiber artists across the country created their own vision of a "California Ice Storm". As you came into the Pershing Center there was a large group of quilts by Jennie Rayment "Tuck Twiddle, Roll & Fold". My pictures do not do them justice in regards to the manipulation, origami etc. involved in their production. Look towards the end with the two color quilts.

Another great group was from the "Fortune Cookie Challenge". The Subterranean Art Quilters were each given a fortune cookie to open and interpret in their own unique way. (long tall lady and lady with hat full of stuff).

This was the first year for the quilt show in Lincoln and though it wasn't as big as DesMoines, it had over 80 vendors and was well worth the trip - John even got to chit chat with Eleanor Burns. She was so shocked that I would let him carry a bag other than hers, that she autographed one of her bags for him and had him put my purchases in it. Not sure what all they spoke about while I was shopping, but I did buy one of her books that I did not have (50% off) and have her sign it so I would not feel so left out.

The International Quilt Study Center is showing Elegant Geometry, American and British Mosaic Patchwork (or what I would call English Paper Piecing) until January 8, 2012. Sorry, no flash photography and not enough lighting for my little camera, so I have copied a page from the display book just to wet your whistle of interest. 2011 GUILD CHALLENGE

A special thanks goes out to our Judges from the Junction City Guild - they did a great job. Thank you Marianne and Linda.

Best Use of Scraps goes to Cindy K. Her husband now needs some new shirts, and maybe he'll get to put HIS quilt in his truck now.

Best Traditional goes to Juanita S.
Hope you had a chance to get a close up - every one of the appliqued blocks where outlined in chain embroidery.

Best Non-Traditional to Jenell H.
Paperpiecing and using her own techniques resulted in this gorgeous sunflower entry.

Best Use of Color went to Donna J.
Count those triangles - yike! Donna may see the imperfections, but for the rest of us - where and who cares?

And Members Choice went to Frances B. with her water color. And to think there was another center that she took out, learned from it, and then gave us this. Here is someone that is dedicated to the end result no matter what.

Great job to each of our 5 winners.

This years Guild Challenge was jammed packed with so many great quilt offerings, that I for one, am very thankful that I did not have to judge.

Verna Lee did a crackers and cheese that would brighten up any one's day.

And Susie did her first minature - she put it under glass as this may be the only one she ever does, so it better stay prestine.

Jan tried her hand at using her left over strip pieces in the flowers.

Cindy was so ambitious that she had two entries.

Karen not only likes quilting, she likes bird watching also - her entry was a combination of both.

Stacey has the perfect spot in her twice re-done basement for her strip entry, Americana of course.

Judy's Wild Child will be in the mail soon to her daughter back east.

Sara took a regular pattern and updated the center applique - great job.

Carol loves Holly Hocks and did an awesome job showing them off.

Vevia's Storm at Sea reminds her to not be anxious and to trust.

Jeanette did a fantastic job on this "started way back" UFO. That's a lot of little pieces woman.

Audrey learned a new technique on the bus TO DesMoines and was able to take drawings that Paul did for her and make them into an offering that will last through the years. Two artists in one family is not fair.

Thank you to all that had an entry into this years Guild Challenge. And thank you Erlene for the fine job you did with coming up with the Flex Plan idea and carrying it out to the end. Show 'n Tell for October

Plenty of members have been very busy sewing away other than the challenge offerings. When Deb came up with her "LOAD" - boy has his woman been busy. Quite a few baby quilts to donate also.

Lisa has been busy making sure all of those at her work place are prepared for their new little ones. Look at that 35 minute quilt with the rick rack - great outcome.

Sara has found a way to take the past and put it into a great new offering. While Cindy has used left overs and refurbished a repurpose besides.

Judy needs a round of applause, not only did she make one 2011 BOM quilt - finished with label sewed on, she did TWO of them. Way to go Judy, great gifts for the granddaughters.
How many yards did Frances say she put into her woven rug? Yikes, but what an end result.

Jenell has finished up a few UFO's and what a job, even the back is interesting. Love all the flying geese too. Forgot to ask Jenell if this wipes out her UFO list.

Some where in that crowd is every one - sneaky hide behinds included. Thanks to the stranger that snapped this. As the center was right at her back, she could not step any farther away to get us - this was mad squash, hold the next guy up before you all go.

If you look close - you might see exhaustion, or you might see sharing what we got and what we are going back in for as soon as we rest. Audrey and VernaLee have never met a stranger and Karen is just happy to find a seat.

Louann is already planning next years trip. Put it down on your calendar for the first week in Oct. 2012.

Last Day

What a mad exodus from the motel on that last morning. Some were coming out smiling from ear to ear as they knew they had done some pretty nifty shopping and today was just a free fun day. Others had that look of being on the last safari and nothing was going to get in there way. Our driver, Kenny, did a great job getting everything into the luggage compartment.

Yep, there was more to unload when we got back then there was to load when we left in the dark. Felt so good to step down on to Clay Center soil. And great to see those that came to pick some of us up. Wonderful trip.

DesMoines, IA Quilt Show - Just a few

It was reported that there were over 600 quilts in the second building, and we do not know how many in the first - so natch - you are only getting a few here. But we hope they give you a taste of what you can expect when you to the next DesMoines quilt festival. It was awesome looking at all the talent and of course pretty cool to see and talk to a designer. Look through these pictures slowly. You will see some that are for Ruth P., one that takes after Frances B tossed 9 patch, one that uses the new 35 minute quilt idea that Lisa showed us a few months ago - and just lots of ideas. And way at the bottom is a picture of our birthday girl on the trip. Sssscccchhhhh! Some girls have all the luck. Way to go VLM!
